14 Jun Summer Fashion Trends and How To Get It For Less
Yes! It’s that time of the year again. My favorite season is here. Time for bikinis, summer dresses, and tiny shorts. We kinda wear that almost year-round here in Miami, but it gives us South Floridians another excuse to dare to bare.
I am very excited about the fashion trends this season! Not only because the inspirations for Spring/Summer 2016 fashion trends are eclectic, fun, and wearable, but the designers have gleaned influences that are highly representative of one of my favorite decades— the 90s.
THE SLIP DRESS
Next to the grunge look, there’s nothing that says 1990s than the then ubiquitous slip dress, as modeled here by uber models Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss
This year’s version is more sleek, elegant, and sophisticated, as seen in these Stella McCartney silhouettes.

OFF SHOULDER
As a girl growing up in the 90s, I remember thinking that Christina Applegate was the sexiest, coolest girl and everyone wanted to be her. This still of her from the underrated Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead rocking this amazing outfit is everything.
This year’s off-shoulder look is refined and fresh, as seen on Michael Kors, Tibi, and Tory Burch. It’s easy to pull off so you’ll be seeing this look everywhere.

COMBAT BOOTS AND DRESSES
This was my favorite look of the 90s. I thought that the juxtaposition between the feminine, flowy dress against the tough Doc Martens is just pure romance. This 1992 Vogue editorial shot by Steven Meisel with Nadja Auermann and Kirsten McMenamy is one of my all-time faves.
This is a super-wearable trend as seen on Jessica Alba and on the runway at John Galliano

Other 90s trends that are going to pop over the horizon once more: chokers, fanny packs, grunge/flannel, dark lipstick (remember Black Honey?), backpacks, iridescent make-up, and (unfortunately) sky-high platforms and jelly shoes.
With the GNR (Guns N’ Roses for those not ITK) reunion a few months ago, I’m kinda thinking that this 90s revival may be here for awhile. So time to watch reruns of Friends and 90210 and get some fashion inspiration!
PS: reminiscing about my very first Vogue issue in the 1990s: April 1991 (cover is of Judit Masco, Niki Taylor & Karen Mulder)
